Elect Democratic Women Statement on Supreme Court Decision Weakening the Voting Rights Act

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Elect Democratic Women (EDW), the congressional member-led committee dedicated to electing Democratic women to Congress, released the following statement from Chair Rep. Lois Frankel in response to the Supreme Court’s decision further weakening the Voting Rights Act:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision further eroding the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is a direct assault on one of the most important civil rights laws in our nation’s history.

“For decades, the Voting Rights Act has been a cornerstone of our democracy—protecting against discrimination and ensuring every eligible voter, regardless of race, language, or background, has a fair and equal voice. By weakening these protections, the Court has made it easier for politicians to choose their voters instead of voters choosing their leaders.

“This ruling opens the door to voter suppression and partisan gerrymandering that dilute the voices of communities of color and undermine fair representation.

“Let’s be clear: this is not an isolated decision. Republicans—and justices appointed by Donald Trump—are systematically chipping away at the Voting Rights Act because they know they cannot win on their record. Instead of competing for votes, they are working to restrict them.

“We cannot and will not stand by. Elect Democratic Women is committed to electing leaders who will protect voting rights, strengthen our democracy, and ensure every voice is heard.

“The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy—and we will fight to defend it.”
