WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, Elect Democratic Women (EDW) released the following statement on Republicans passing their bill to kick millions of Americans off their health insurance and food assistance while giving billionaires and corporations a massive tax break and adding $4.4 trillion to the national debt.
“Not only does Trump’s big ugly bill passed by Republicans knock millions of people off of health care and food assistance, it strikes a cruel blow at patients who use Planned Parenthood by prohibiting payments with Medicaid funding. All this leaving our grandchildren a heavy debt to give billionaires another tax break. Women voters and their families will not forget this betrayal next November and will make their voices heard,” said Elect Democratic Women Chair, Rep. Lois Frankel.
An estimated 17 million Americans will lose their health care, including 11.8 million who would lose their Medicaid. Medicaid covers one in five women and 40% of births; it is the largest single-payer of maternity care in the United States. The bill cruely prohibits using Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides essential services like cancer screenings and contraception; one in three women have used Planned Parenthood for health care.
