Statement from Elect Democratic Women on the Retirement of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi

WASHINGTON, DC – Elect Democratic Women (EDW), the Congressional Member-led committee dedicated to electing Democratic women to Congress, applauds Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi on a historic and monumental career in public service. Speaker Emerita announced this morning that she will retire from Congress at the end of her current term in January 2027.

Rep. Lois Frankel, Chair of Elect Democratic Women, released the following statement:

“For nearly four decades, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s leadership transformed our democracy and proved that a woman’s place is in the House—as Speaker. As the first woman to hold the gavel, she broke barriers, expanded opportunity, and redefined what it means to lead with strength and purpose. Her courage, discipline, and strategic brilliance guided the nation through its most challenging moments and delivered lasting progress for working families.

“Speaker Pelosi’s legacy is one of conviction and achievement—from expanding access to health care to defending democracy and protecting women’s reproductive rights. Her legislative accomplishments speak for themselves: the Affordable Care Act, which extended coverage to millions of Americans; historic climate investments; major infrastructure legislation; and a steadfast defense of our democratic institutions.

“As an organization dedicated to electing Democratic women at every level of government, we know that Speaker Pelosi’s legacy extends far beyond legislation. She mentored and empowered countless women leaders, worked tirelessly to elect Democrats, and opened doors for women to rise through the ranks of congressional leadership. The record number of Democratic women serving in Congress today stands as a testament to her vision and commitment to building a government that truly reflects America.

“Elect Democratic Women extends our deepest gratitude to Speaker Pelosi for her historic service and her unwavering belief that representation matters. Her legacy will continue to shape the lives of women and working families for generations to come, inspiring young women across the country to lead and make their voices heard.”
